January Program Announcement

Tuesday January 15 at Crestwood Elementary School

Social Time at 7:00. Meeting begins at 7:30 sharp

Our program this month features two local authors with new books published in 2012. Both authors are long-time residents, and neighborhood treasures. We are very pleased to have them together on our program. George Towery will speak about his book, Touched by a Child, and Jim Atwood will discuss his latest book, America and Its Guns; A Theological Expose. Bonus, both will bring books for purchase and signing.

George Towery’s award winning educational career spanned forty-five years, forty of them as a principal.  Among his honors was his selection as the very first elementary principal to be named Principal of the Year (1988-89) by Fairfax County Schools.  In addition, George was Phi Delta Kappa’s Educator of the Year, Fairfax County Lee District’s Les Dorson Citizen of the Year, and was named Educator of the Year by the Mount Vernon Chapter of the DAR.  The lawyers of Fairfax County’s Bar Association also honored him for his service to children.  Most recently his book,  Touched By AChild, was the basis for a resolution honoring him by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. George is justifiably proud that his school, Cameron Elementary, was picked by Redbook Magazine as one of “America’s 100 Best Elementary Schools” (1995).  Now retired from his day job, George lives in the neighborhood and is a popular speaker at groups of educators and parents. He is still an active volunteer in the community.

Jim Atwood was a pastor in Wallace, NC for five years before he and his wife, Roxana went to Japan as missionaries. After nine years, in 1974, they returned to the States and Jim was called to be the Pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church here in Springfield.

Shortly after Jim arrived at Grace Presbyterian, a charter member of the church was shot and killed by a teenager who went to the local bowling alley complaining that he had no money. His friend reached into his jacket and gave him a Saturday Night Special saying, “Here, go get yourself some money. When you get some, give me 20 bucks and you can keep the gun.”

For the next 38 years Jim has worked in gun violence prevention. He is a member of the Board of The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, having served as its Chair for two terms; served as Interfaith Chair of The Million Mom March in 2000; was a member of the writing team for the denomination’s comprehensive study on Gun Violence, Gospel Values: Mobilizing in Response to God‘s Call which was adopted unanimously by the General Assembly in 2010. In June of 2012, he published America and Its Guns: A Theological Expose. He is also a member of the National Committee of the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship and Chair of Heeding God’s Call in Greater Washington, an interfaith-based organization which helps faith communities organize and publicly pressure gun stores to adopt a set of practices which deter straw purchasing.

Jim lives in the neighborhood with his wife, Roxana.
