Support a Vibrant, Walkable Springfield!

Recently, a plan was submitted to build a seven-story storage facility behind the Marriott TownePlace Suites on Brandon Avenue in Springfield.

Springfield Civic Association (SCA) is 100 percent opposed to this proposal.

Not only is this site in our Central Business District of Springfield, it is part of a designated Commercial Revitalization District.  The SCA wants this area to be a vibrant, walkable environment that has a substantial vital impact on existing businesses, employment and nearby residences. A seven-story storage facility falls short.

Even the Fairfax County Planning and Development staff made the initial recommendation to NOT further consider the proposal to change the Comprehensive Plan saying:

“The proposed self-storage use would not contribute to the Comprehensive Plan’s primary objectives for the core main street area of the Springfield CBC, which envision the development of an urban village of active, community-serving uses.”

The county staff went on to elaborate:

  • A multi-story self-storage building would not typically provide the type of streetscape and building activity necessary to create the vibrant, pedestrian-oriented environment envisioned,
  • It would not serve as a gateway feature that conveys the CBC plan’s intended character and identity for the area.

Despite the county staff recommendations, there are some interests who are determined to build this storage facility in our neighborhood, not theirs.

If you don’t want this to happen, then make your voice heard! By signing this petition, you can tell Supervisor Lusk and the county planning commission that you don’t want a seven-story storage facility in Springfield.
